Why Leadership is a Service

Three questions to Martin Büchele about modern employee leadership

What distinguishes a good leader?

A good leader is like a captain who navigates the ship with foresight and ensures it doesn't run aground. Above all, they are characterized by their personality and possess the ability to create the conditions for the team to handle their work as well and effectively as possible. Communication plays a crucial role in this process. Only when each employee understands the pursued goals and why their work is important on this path, the company as a whole will be successful. It is essential not to assume that explanations have already been provided. Each individual processes information in their own way. The art lies in recognizing which communication method the different personalities in the team require and adapting to it.

What does it mean to perceive leadership as a service?

At its core, every leadership style embodies a fundamental understanding of one's role. A leader who prioritizes the needs of others over their own interests will be more successful in the long run. With such a leadership approach, they create conditions for employees to contribute and develop based on their individual strengths and needs. Consequently, the success of the company as a whole will follow suit.

How does such a leadership approach manifest in everyday work?

An effective leader listens, asks questions, and involves their team in decision-making processes. Someone who carries themselves with confidence, empathy, and prudence in life will not be easily disturbed by a crisis at work. On the other hand, if a leader takes over a team feeling rushed, stressed, and lacking self-confidence, they will quickly find themselves in a situation where they demand performance from their employees only through pressure. Such leaders are easy to recognize. They "re-act" instead of conscientiously "act." Open dialogue, transparency, and honesty are essential for collaboration. So, if someone asks themselves, "Why is my team doing everything wrong?" they should first inquire, "What have I done wrong, and how can I adjust my leadership style?"
